Looking to spice up your next van life camping trip with a bit of romance? Whether you’re in a new relationship or you’ve been on the road together for years, there’s something magical about slowing down, unplugging, and soaking up nature with your partner. Luckily, you don’t have to travel far from Melbourne to find dreamy spots perfect for a couples getaway in your campervan.
Here are some of my favourite romantic vanlife destinations within a few hours' drive of Melbourne.
1. Warburton – Love Among the Trees
Nestled in the Yarra Ranges, Warburton feels like something out of a fairy tale. Think fern-covered forests, misty mornings, and crisp mountain air. Camp by the Yarra River, wake up to the sound of birds, and wander hand-in-hand through the Redwood Forest. The calm here is unmatched — perfect for switching off and tuning into each other.
Vibe: Tranquil, lush, and slow-paced.
Best for: Stargazing, forest walks, riverside cuddles.
2. Mornington Peninsula – Beachside Bliss
For classic romance, the Mornington Peninsula delivers in spades. You’ll find stunning coastal drives, hidden beaches, and wineries galore. Pull up near Sorrento or Blairgowrie, set up camp, and watch the sunset with fish and chips in hand. A soak in the Peninsula Hot Springs is the cherry on top.
Vibe: Classy coastal, easy-going.
Best for: Beach walks, hot springs, wine by the van.
3. Daylesford – Cosy Country Escape
If van life camping for you means fire pits, mountain air, and a cheeky glass of red, Daylesford hits the mark. Known for its spa culture and charming town vibes, it’s a fantastic place to park up and unwind. Wander through farmers markets, book a couples massage, or just snuggle up in the van under a starry sky.
Vibe: Bougie bush retreat.
Best for: Massage dates, campfire convos, gourmet local produce.
4. Great Otway National Park – Waterfalls & Wilderness
Just a few hours from Melbourne, the Otways are wild, green, and perfect for a romantic escape. Picture a quiet campsite surrounded by towering trees, a waterfall just a short walk away, and no phone reception to interrupt. This is the place for real connection.
Vibe: Wild, remote, pure nature.
Best for: Waterfall swims, unplugged time, forest immersion.
5. Phillip Island – Coastal Romance with Wildlife
Watch little penguins waddle home at dusk, spot koalas in the treetops, and camp right near the beach. Phillip Island might be known for family holidays, but it’s also incredibly romantic if you pick the right spot. Start your day with sweeping ocean views and drift off to sleep with the gentle sound of waves in the background.
Vibe: Fun, relaxed, animal-loving.
Best for: Penguin spotting, beach naps, oceanfront coffee dates.
Van Life Tip: Make It Romantic
Romance in a van doesn’t need roses and candles. Here’s what works for us:
- Pack a picnic basket and surprise your partner.
- String up fairy lights in the van.
- Wake up early to catch the sunrise from bed.
- Bring along a playlist of songs that mean something to you both.
- Share a bottle of wine under the stars (just don’t drink and drive!).
With the right mindset (and maybe a shared bag of Tim Tams), any van trip can be romantic. You just need the right location — and near Melbourne, we’re absolutely spoilt for choice.
